Description

The West Coast Trail gets all the glory when it comes to BC trails. Known internationally, the trail is only open from May 1st to September 30th and during the peak hiking season (June 15th – Sept 15th) a limited number of hikers are allowed to start at either trailhead each day. Reservations can be made at 877-737-3783 or 519-826-5391 (internationally). Wilderness campsites are found all along the trail and luxury camping is available too. The trail itself is a demanding 75 km (46 mile) one-way trek from Bamfield to Port Renfrew along the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island. Old growth forest, waterfalls and large beaches typify the landscape along the trail. The scenery is much the same as it was a century ago, when the lifesaving trail was first built for shipwrecked sailors along the treacherous coast. You can still see many of the wrecks, along with other man-made and natural points of interest. There is lots of wildlife to be seen along the trail as well, including orca and gray whales.
